It’s been a minute, but beloved Detroit producer and general funkmaster Griz is back with some hot new stuff. “Before I Go” is a seven-minute behemoth featuring soul singer Leo Napier, who has previously worked with Gramatik. This track is a clear continuation of the electro-funk direction that Griz is most known for, but this time with a touch of triumph.
“That’s why I’m gonna leave y’all today,” Napier sings in the chorus. The buildup is almost as tremendous as the drop itself—the sweetness of the life-affirming saxophone solo is made even sweeter by the electrifying production values and frisky bass lines that precede it. If this track offers any indication of what an upcoming release might sound like, then Griz has definitely got something truly special in store.
Just a few days ago, All Good Records initiated their Griz-curated producer spotlight series called Freshly Baked. 10 undiscovered producers all picked by the man himself, starting with Colorado-based Falcon Punch. Chill island vibes as a chaser to this future funk explosion.
